Digestive upset affects many people on a regular basis. What are “GI” Problems?
“GI” or Gastrointestinal problems a term used to cover a wide variety of issues involving the gastrointestinal system. The gastrointestinal system includes the mouth, pharynx (throat), esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum and anus.
Gastrointestinal Problems: Signs and Symptoms
A recent study found the most common reported symptoms of gastrointestinal upset are often heartburn/reflux, abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, and constipation. However, gastrointestinal problems can also include nausea and vomiting, dysphagia or trouble swallowing, and bowel incontinence. Although the symptoms of gastrointestinal problems can range of mild to severe, often times symptoms go unreported and without treatment or management.
What Causes Gastrointestinal Discomfort?
Due to the vast number of gastrointestinal issues that exist, there are many reasons why people experience GI problems. Some common causes of GI discomfort include: consuming a high fat or acidic diet, eating too quickly, consuming a large quantities of dairy products, stress, medications, or weakening of important sphincters located throughout the GI tract.
